Oltre agli indiscutibili effetti positivi dell’esposizione solare per la salute umana, i raggi UV sono stati ampiamente studiati per aspetti tossicologici legati a dosi eccessive di UVB e UVA, che coinvolgono scottature solari, invecchiamento cutaneo, danni al DNA delle cellule cutanee e cancerogenesi. La protezione solare aiuta a prevenire queste problematiche sia a breve, sia a lungo termine. Anche nei prodotti solari la tendenza oggigiorno è quella di utilizzare materie prime naturali per una maggior sicurezza per il consumatore finale ma anche per una migliore compatibilità con l’ambiente, soprattutto per l’ecosistema marino. In questo lavoro è stata indagata l’attività dell’estratto di semi di Pongamia (pongamolo) come booster di protezione solare per il filtro minerale ZnO. I risultati ottenuti hanno dimostrato come l’aggiunta di pongamolo in emulsione permetta di ottenere un importante effetto booster (confermato dal test in vivo) già a basse concentrazioni. Questo approccio si inserisce in un percorso volto a formulare creme solari completamente naturali pensate per un consumatore molto consapevole e attento alla scelta dei prodotti cosmetici acquistati e si inserisce nel trend della sempre più ricercata green beauty.

Pongamia seed extract as an innovative SPF booster for 100% mineral sun protection
In addition to the indisputable positive effects of sun exposure for human health, UV rays have been extensively studied for toxicological aspects related to excessive doses of UVB and UVA, involving sunburn, skin aging, damage to skin cells DNA and carcinogenesis. Natural or synthetic sunscreen helps prevent these problems both in the short and long term. Even in solar products, the trend nowadays is to use natural raw materials for greater safety for the final consumer but also for better compatibility with the environment, especially for the marine ecosystem. In this work the activity of Pongamia seed extract (Pongamol) as a sun protection booster for the ZnO mineral filter was investigated. The results obtained showed how the addition of Pongamol in emulsion allows to obtain an important booster effect (confirmed by the in vivo test) already at low concentrations. This approach is part of a path aimed at formulating completely natural suncreams thought at a consumer who is very aware and attentive to the choice of cosmetic products purchased, and is part of the trend of increasingly sought – after green beauty.
